FSC, Inc: Simplifying Oil & Gas Projects with Data

Oil and gas projects can be incredibly complex, expensive, and require detailed planning. As such, companies are increasingly leveraging valuable data at every stage of an oil and gas project to accelerate decision-making, improve project quality, and drive performance. From land surveying, engineering, and construction staking, data plays a pivotal role in increasing operational efficiency and reducing costs. However, making sense of the vast data continues to remain a significant hurdle in the majority of these projects. In its quest to help companies overcome these challenges, Texas-based FSC, Inc. combines generations of expertise and state-of-the-art technology to provide professional data-driven engineering, land surveying, and GIS services for upstream, midstream, and downstream operations for the oil and gas industry. Established over 45 years ago, FSC, Inc. is recognized for innovation and reliable services to oil and gas projects and construction layout services across Texas, Colorado, and New Mexico. “FSC, Inc. is involved in all aspects of the oil and gas industry from plant construction, land lease surveys, as-built services, digital mapping, and more. We help clients drive down costs and increase efficiency with the power of data,” notes Matthew Loessin, Chief Operating Officer at FSC, Inc.

FSC, Inc.’s proprietary software collects data directly from the field and shares it directly with the client, allowing them to review the data. The software ensures that any data collected or drawings submitted by FSC, Inc. are automatically uploaded to the client’s GIS system in real-time, which enables faster decision-making. FSC, Inc. also provides air mapping and video services via drones so that clients have first-hand knowledge of any possible obstructions that might hinder their projects on-field. “Ten years ago, we had to manually visit the field and measure every element. Today, much of it can be achieved via aerial photography, which also allows us to cover larger areas in shorter periods of time,” says Loessin.

A typical client engagement for FSC, Inc. starts with a discussion to identify the client’s project needs, expectations, and final deliverables. The company then researches any previous information, surveys, or geological data regarding the particular location and builds a GIS map of the area. The information collected is handed over to the on-site crews, who then conduct route surveys, preliminary site surveys, pipeline surveys, and well location staking for the project. With built-in programs in its GIS system, FSC, Inc. extrapolates the data collected on-field, uploads it to the cloud, and runs it through digital mapping software such as AutoCAD Civil 3D or ESRI ArcGIS software suite to render exhibits for the client.
In addition, the programs upload the data onto the client’s master GIS, enabling them to make near-real-time decisions after analyzing everything on-site. As a result, clients get the opportunity to review and finalize the data collected before the company starts preparing well location exhibits, pipeline flags, alignment sheets, as-built surveys, and more. “Our database has all the information to track any detail in case of a failure. For instance, if a pipeline fails and requires maintenance or reconstruction, we can pull out all details, such as who built the pipe, what day the pipe was put into the ground, and more,” adds Loessin. The company’s record of historical data helps with future maintenance and safe reconstruction when required.

With a people-first attitude, FSC, Inc. firmly believes that its people are its greatest asset. The company consistently re-trains its staff to ensure they are up to date with the latest trends in the market and can help clients in the best way possible. “At FSC, Inc. we have a great group of employees who think outside the box and work on solutions that our competitors haven’t thought of,” comments Loessin.

While the COVID-19 pandemic has presented several obstacles for the oil and gas industry, the company has weathered the storm and is now on course to continue to grow. FSC, Inc. aims to expand geographically into newer areas while growing in other markets. A well-diversified company with a presence in the transportation, solar, and space exploration industry, FSC, Inc. plans to strengthen its foothold in these markets and achieve well-rounded growth in the next 12 to 18 months.
